Umm, I am a bit confused. Is this Miley Cyrus? Like, Hannah Montana*, Disney Channel Miley Cyrus? O my goodness…O my goodness…
If I cared anything about the impressionable minds of the young females in this video, I would comment on Hannah Montana’s clothing (or lack thereof). But since I could care less, I choose to turn my attention to the ridiculousness of her performance. And it truly is ridiculous.
Of all things that she could have done, Hannah had the nerve to come out on stage with a du-rag and gold door-knockers on like she ‘s somebody’s homegirl from around the way. Isn’t that little girl’s dad the Achy Breaky Heart country singer dude? Why in the world is this child on stage trying to be gangsta? Achy Breaky Heart and gangsta do not, and I repeat, DO NOT mix. Not-at-all.
And to reiterate, over and over that “the taxi man turned on the radio, and a Jay-Z song was on, and a Jay-Z song was on” while surrounded by California Love dressed young men makes Hannah look like a fool. The whole Westside style that she buffoonishly portrays has nothing to do with Brooklyn-bred Jay-Z. Last time I checked, du-rags, flannel looking button-ups, and low rider bikes were a West Coast thing and Jay-Z is from the East Coast. West and East are opposites…maybe Hannah is confused.
Now if Hannah were a hood type chick, I wouldn’t even bother to comment on this weird performance. If Hannah had a viable connection to California and/or people of color from that region and just so happened to really, really like Jay-Z, I would keep all comments to myself. But the truth is that this girl was born in Nashville, Tennessee, her father is one of the most famous country singers ever, and her godmother is Dolly Parton. So, while she may have an affinity for random Jay-Z songs, she has no connection to the West Coast culture that she is trying to emulate-or for that matter, any people of color.
It is no coincidence that her crowd of screaming fans is overwhelmingly filled with white teenager girls. Hannah is a young white female and her music caters to young white females. I would venture to say that about 95% (if not 100%) of Hannah’s fans in this video have no clue what being ‘gangsta’ is really about or what it’s like to ride on a low rider bike and wear a du-rag. They are merely entertained by Hannah's buffoonery. And that, my friends, is a shame.
Should it really be acceptable for Hannah to parade on stage impersonating ethic culture when she is clearly NOT ETHNIC? Should we be entertained? Furthermore, should we allow her fans to look at this performance as mythical entertainment? How far should we allow entertainers like Hannah go before we stay ‘STOP MAKING FUN OF OUR CULTURE?” I mean, she has every right to wear what she wants to wear and perform in any way that she sees fit but at some point, a line must be drawn between appreciative emulation and sheer disrespectfulness. This performance pushed the limit…do you think it is acceptable?
SN: I choose to completely ignore that Bieber kid rolling out on stage wearing a du-rag , black tee, and black fitted. That was simply a waste of a good camera angle and completely retarded.
*I chose to call Miley Hannah throughout this post just because…
