Hey world! I haven't posted anything in a while, but have no fear, re.definition is still here! Hopefully by the beginning of next week, re.definition (www.redefiningconception.com) will be up and running with a new look and all new posts. For now, you can read the below post on Sunday's BET Awards.
BET AWARDS RECAP-Memorable moments and performances
Chris Breezy is back! (Oh, yes!)
I have been patiently waiting, for the true return of Chris Brown. As talented of a man as he is, I was a little saddened that his mishap with Rihanna almost ruined his career. But with Breezy's perfect rendition of classic Michael Jackson dance moves on last night's BET Awards, and his heartfelt emotional breakdown during "Man in the Mirror" I think he's back and better than ever.
To see Chris Brown on stage performing what he should have been able to perform at last year's BET Awards/horrible tribute to Michael Jackson, was like watching magic. He is the only one, and I do mean THE ONLY ONE, in the industry right now that could ever do Michael's dance moves any justice. And I am so glad that he had his chance to show everyone that he is worthy of their praise and forgiveness.
Personally, I never disowned Breezy after his altercation with Rihanna. While I do not think that a man should ever hit a woman, I believe that Chris Brown's violent behavior was probably provoked by an angry and slightly crazed woman who was extremely upset that her man was receiving text messages from some random groupie chick. And I am pretty sure that everyone reading this right now knows just how crazy a woman can get when she suspects her man is cheating. So, even though there is no excuse for Breezy's violent behavior, there is probably a very sensible explanation to the beat down he gave Rihanna. But, does any of that matter now? No probably not. What matters now (at least to me, anyway) is that Chris Brown is back, to pop, lock, and moonwalk his way to the top of the charts.
Kanyeeze is back too!
Kanye absolutely killed it as the opening act of the BET Awards. He gave a true hip hop performance--just him, a mountain, and a big a$$ chain swinging around his neck. Classic. And what, do you ask, was that big a$$ chain around his neck? Well, it wasn't his usual blinged out Jesus, that's for sure. For those who do not know, Kanye was wearing a huge "Horace Chain" which is nothing more than an extremely large Horus (Egyptian god) medallion hanging from an extremely large chain. And to top it off, Ye had a ring to match. Truly, truly classic.
Even though Kanye performed in the dark shadows of strategic stage lighting, the audience was able to see exactly what he wanted us to see. We saw him, standing on a mountain top, looking down on everyone, while a big a$$ Horus medallion swung back and forth around his neck. Ye left us all questioning the meaning of his performance but never his talent. True artistry at its finest.
EL DEBARGE! WHAT?!
I was so shocked to see El DeBarge hit the stage (with no introduction might I add) and perform the old school DeBarge hits! I was so hyped that I didn't know what to do. He killed it, shut it down, and made my night. His voice sounded just like it did back in the 80's. I was pleasantly pleased to say the absolute least, and I'm happy BET let him grace the stage.
Jonezy has a jones for Love Jones
While I probably would never like Nia Long if I knew her in real life, I have a slight addiction to many of the movies that she has starred in. It's not the inclusion of Nia Long in these movies that makes me like them so much as it is the sheer excellence of the movies themselves. Nevertheless, one of my favorite movies of all time is Love Jones, so imagine how surprised I was to see a live reenactment of one of my favorite parts of the movie, live on BET---Lorenz Tate's jazzy spoken word piece. I never really liked Nia's poem in the movie, and I didn't like it any more during the awards show, but I had no problem suffering through her verses to hear Lorenz. Nina might have had a problem with Darius' over sexed poem in the movie but I surely didn't. I loved it in the movie and I loved it even more live on BET. That was better than Queen Latifah's numerous regenerations of Cleo and other random movie characters that she has played over the years. Good job Nia and Lorenz!
Queen Latifah is a rapper? Oh, really?
Queen Latifah is one of the best female rappers to ever grace a microphone. And in case anyone may have forgotten, she reminded you of that last night. To hear The Queen rap was like hearing… well, it was like hearing a queen rap. She is the truth, always has been, and the short but sweet rhyme that she spit was incredible. Had Latifah been in the Best Female Rap category, that Nicki chick would have been but a mere afterthought. Yes, The Queen is still the Queen. Up and coming female rappers could learn a thing or two from Latifah's grace, style, and pure talent.
Tyrese tore is down, Teddy P must be pleased
Tyrese is to Teddy P as Chris Brown is to MJ. I can't think of anyone who could have done the Teddy Pendergrass tribute any better than Tyrese. Black came back as Tyrese serenaded the crowd just as Teddy would have done; with sexy soulfulness. The performance was amazing and one I am sure Teddy would have been proud of.
All female tribute to Prince
I went into this whole 2010 BET Awards thing thinking that the Prince tribute would be the best part of the night. That was until I saw Chris Breezy. So forgive me for not being as hype as I probably should be about the amazing performances by Alicia, Esperanza and Patti, and Janelle. All I can really say about that performance is that each lady did her thing and looked beautiful doing it. Janelle was incredible as I knew she would be, Esperanza was beautiful and sounded great on the bass, Patti let it rip showing the young singers how it's done, and Alicia took her unborn child for a ride on a piano. All in all, I thought the tribute was great. And Alicia, while not the strongest singer out there, did a wonderful job and gets major cool points for climbing atop that piano with a belly full of baby. Get 'em girls!
-----------------------------
The rest of the awards show was just 'alright' with a few extra highlights along the way. Of course T.I.'s performance was memorable, as was Trey Songz mother taking the stage and thanking her son's fans for their support. I can say BET did a pretty good job with this show (way better than last year's MJ Tribute) and hopefully this is a glimpse of what's to come in the future.
