Like you didn’t know Howard Stern was a jerk…Gabourey Sidibe is still great though…

I know that I am a little late with this one but I've been very busy this past week…. TGIF!!!! Anyway…

Recently, Howard Stern made some very ignorant comments about 'Precious' starlet Gabourey Sidibe. He said things such as,"There's the most enormous, fat, black chick I've ever seen." He also said "She should have gotten the Best Actress award because she's never going to have another shot. What [other] movie is she gonna be in?"

Whoa, that's pretty harsh.

Howard Stern must be oblivious to the fact that Ms. Gabby has already completed her second film, "Yelling to the Sky." He must also be completely retarded (sorry for the word choice Sarah Palin) to think that he can blast a recent Ocsar Nominated actress over her weight and her skin color. First of all, people who are nominated for an Oscar are people that America likes and thinks are very talented. In case you didn't know, you never want to mess with what America likes; if America likey, you better likey too. Second, this is 2010 and everyone must be politically correct--calling someone 'fat' is just not cool. Third, our president is black—enough said.

See, as a semi-revolutionist and pro-minority advocate, I am supposed to be all-- "Screw Howard Stern. He's a jerk. He doesn't know what he talking about," but for some reason, I am having trouble with my expected rant. I mean, I can't stand him any more than anyone else with half a brain but something about what he said resonates with me. I think that the way in which he made his statements was hateful, but what else can you expect from a man like him? Some people don't know what to say or when to say it. Stern is one of those people. But, if you really think about what he said, you just might realize….

He may be right. Well at least partially.

For the moment I am going to ignore the racist and all together rude undertones of Stern's comments as I focus on the underlying theory of what he is saying. Now, obviously 'Precious' is not the end for Gabby because she has already finished her 2nd film. But what about her future in Hollywood? It is obvious that she is a big girl who happens to be black. It is also obvious that she is a fantastic actress. But is her acting ability enough to keep her in the game? Let's think about it…

I think that black people/monorities always get the short end of the stick in Hollywood. In my opinion, brown skin looks wonderful on the big screen but my opinion counts for very little. In addition, I think that big people, no matter their skin color, get an even shorter end of the stick when it comes to movie casting. Unless a movie director is looking for someone to fill the role of the "fat kid" or "the overweight, depressed woman", the pleasantly plump are usually out of luck. There are exceptions but not many (in comparison to the other roles available in Hollywood).  So, when you are black and overweight, your options in Hollywood are slim. Or, if you find that you have a plethora of acting options, then you are definitely a victim of "type-casting".

This is where I see Gabby, a type-casted actress who, unless she loses weight, will forever play roles specifically for big girls. And that's not fair.

So in essence, even though Stern is the equivalent to a donkey's behind, he might have a slight point regarding Gabby. He was little extra when stating his position but I get it—big people who happen to be black are usually not Hollywood's favorites. They may play the hell out of a role written specifically for a "big, black person" but then what? Um, what was that guy's name that played Big in "Notorious"? Exactly…

Now, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Gabby's acting. Even though I plan to never watch 'Precious' again in my life (it was that disturbing to me) I still think that she was incredible. Simply amazing. Her acting ability is definitely worth all the praise that she is receiving. Gabby is far from the girl that she portrayed in 'Precious'. Her real mannerisms and way of speaking is totally different than 'Precious'. When I first saw Gabby do an interview I was like "What the---who the---that's not Precious!!!" Yes, she's that good of an actress. So, in actuality, I think that she should get all the movie opportunities that she can handle because her acting is superb. But the chances are slim that Gabby is going to rack up a lot of movie roles because, as Stern ignorantly reminded us, Gabby's skin is too dark and she is not a size 6. It's a shame but it's true.

Notice that I choose to use the phrase "the chances are slim" rather than "there is no chance". I am an optimist (sometimes) and I think that anything is possible. There is a possibility that Gabby will avoid being type-casted and excel as an actress with no boundaries.

At least I hope so….

"So, when you are black and overweight, your options in Hollywood are slim." Love the play on words. . . but Precious, overall, was a horrible movie. The girl who played precious has a nice smile which makes her slightly attractive, the bare minimum for Hollywood, and she is not all that bad looking. Her acting was decent, but the plot of the movie completely overshadowed her talent. She will definitely slim down because that's what Hollywood does to people. . . look at Jennifer Hudson.

This was a great Post. The thing with me is that... i dont really know what made her such a great actress in this film...You know what?... I think i do... I beleive that most of her fame and recognition has come from a certain form of empathy...meaning..she is being cheered up by accolades... for her looks for being big..and being darskinned..as if its a bad thing... America is trying to show us...that they have a heart and are therefore overwhelming Gabby with oppertunity... and much like you said in your post, she will be type-casted..which shows us the praise and oppertunity...is not designed to change any social norms of hollywood..nope.. this praise welcomes you to hollywood and sits you in a cute little box that says...: You can have all the oppertunity that you want as long as every role you play keeps you fat and black... I hope that she can move pass that.. i hope that she wants to be seen as more than just Precious..more tahn just a big black girl..hmmm.. not so sure tho.. cuz when the money talks..ninjas get the jiggin... -Furious

First let me address the comments.
Mr. Freeman I hope the term horrible was directed at the situation in the movie and not the movie itself. Because by the criteria they use to judge a movie as good "Precious" should have won for best movie. Anyone who watched that movie and was not effected is numb.

Furious I totally agree with you this is a great post. This sista not only has insight but she can express it literature-raly. In your expressing your not knowing if she is a good actress you are actually proving she can act extremely well.

Now to the post.

Mz. Jonezy I just like your writing style. One can not just read your first paragraph and figure out the rest of the article. Your post supports the program I wrote " The Power and Importance of Media". A program designed to put us (brown people) in the position to develop our own media. For anyone interested in know more about the program just let me know.
