Haley Barbour, you are truly a funny man.
Mr. Barbour, current governor of Mississippi and possibly one of the most prominent faces of the Republican Party at the moment, seems to think that he and his generation, (specifically including those of the Republican Party) were the main proponents of racial integration during the Civil Rights era. According to Governor Barbour, he attended integrated schools as a young Mississippian as well as an integrated university as a matriculating college student. It was he (and his generation) who made American racial integration the success that it is now (if you even want to call it a 'success'). And for the record, he says it was the "old Democrats" who fought so hard for racial segregation in America, not the GOP.
Well, Governor Barbour, after a little bit of research, I found out some very interesting information about you. First of all, you were born in October 1947 which currently makes you 62 years old. Now, if you graduated high school and went to college at the age of 17 or 18, then you would have entered your institution of higher learning in 1965. 1965 was only year after the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which, according to many Civil Rights scholars and government officials, was poorly enforced during the first few years of its inception. So with all of that being said, it's highly unlikely Governor Barbour, that your grade school was full of black faces, if any at all. And as for your college years….let's think about that for a minute…
Considering the Civil Rights act of 1964 had only been in effect for about 1 year in 1965 (the assumed roundabout year that Barbour entered college), it is very hard to believe that Governor Barbour's college was significantly integrated at the time of his attendance. In the most likely of cases, Governor Barbour probably attended classes that were between 97-100% white on a daily basis. Also, Governor Barbour went to University of Mississippi which did not accept its first African American student until 1962, approximately 3 years prior to the time that Governor Barbour would have been a student. Do you believe that in 3 years, the University of Mississippi would have been so integrated that its percentage of black student would be worth mentioning now? (Remember, we are talking about Mississippi here) Umm, no.
What is even more interesting is that, according to www.theGrio.com, Governor Barbour sent his children to Manchester Academy (Yazoo City, MS) which did not admit its first African American student until 1996. That means that Haley Barbour is ranting and raving about how he attended an integrated school and how it was the GOP who fought for integration in this nation, when he choose to send his children to a school that was segregated up until 32 years after the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Are you kidding me?
It's no secret that all of this gibber-gabber is for the sole purpose of removing President Obama from the White House. If, by some lie infested miracle, Haley Barbour and his comrades are able to make the Republican Party appear as race relation reformers, the GOP has a chance at gaining control of this country---especially since people are not too happy with the current work being done by President Obama. To me, it doesn't matter what Barbour says or what President Obama does, I know that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are on the side of the people. However, if I am forced to pick the lesser of two evils, I will choose the black man who is currently the president of this nation. If I choose President Obama, at least I can say, "My president is black and he is giving hope to children of color all over this world. Hope that they never would have had if it were not for my black president. This hope will inspire and make a better future for the people, my people."
