~Spring 2010 Fashion~

Spring is literally right around the corner and now is the time to update your closets with your spring must-have items. Most of us are still buried in mounds of snow but that doesn’t mean that we can’t get ready for warm weather and sunshine. Here you will find a brief guide to some of the hottest looks for Spring 2010. This spring/summer is bringing a girly look for the ladies that will include lots of color and sparkle. Men, get ready to take notice! Ladies, consider the suggestions listed below, with a splash of your own personal style, and you are guaranteed to be fresh and fly for spring!

Welcome to Spring 2010!

When warm weather approaches, everyone should reach for the brightest and flashest colors you have, for this spring is the time to flaunt COLOR (think: pretty, bright flowers). We love our black and whites but never forget the color!

Color guides:
DO NOT get rid of your neutrals and B&W pieces. Spring 2010 is all about your staple colors (tan, black, white, cream, grey, etc.) with a bright, bold, and random splash of color. Wear your favorite tan khakis and white shirt with a bold color belt or shoe. It’s all about taking the plain and making it pop with color!

Jewels are in, so get rid of any plastic jewelry you have hanging around from five years ago! We want sparkle and femininity, no cheap plastic!

Clothing Jewel Guide:
Look for shirts or bags that are jewel studded--everything is about sparkle and flash. The simplest outfit can become a fashion surprise with just a bit of colorful jewels. Look for handbags that incorporate pearls or gemstones of every color and size. Beware: There is a huge chance that you can look cheap if you wear too many fake gems and stones. Quality faux gems are the key. Pick your pieces carefully and sparkle in the sun!

Bring on the metallics! Do you remember 1999-2000 when sparkly jeans were popular and everyone had a little silver twinkle in all of their favorite fashion pieces? Well that is coming back, with a bit more sophistication and pomp. We are not bringing back Y2K per se, but we are all about the glisten, twinkle, and texture of metallic clothing. Find a shirt made of metallic fabric to go with your favorite pair of skinny jeans. Look for jackets, shorts, and/or skirts that are tinted with a metal look. Or, look for a simple metal belt to wear around the waist of a solid color dress. You can also look for clothing that has sequins--they give a metallic look as well.

If metallic fabric is a bit too much for your style senses, find a neutral color shirt, maybe grey or light gold, with slight metallic embellishments to wear with skinny jeans or a skirt. If all fails and metallic clothing is just not your thing, you can always wear your favorite neutrals with popping metallic shoes and metallic bangles and necklaces. Layer your gold/silver necklaces and bangles to add depth and make sure they match your shoes. (If everything about your outfit screams glittery and neutral gold, you wouldn’t want to wear silver shoes, would you?)

Legs, legs, legs!!! Show off those legs this spring with short skirts, dresses, and shorts. Try loose fitting shirts to go with your short shorts. Go easy on the denim and pick pieces that are light and bright. Wear colorful necklaces to accent your outfit while your legs roam free below. And don’t forget a nice stiletto-they make your legs look longer and slimmer while transforming a simple shorts and shirt daytime outfit to the perfect ensemble for a casual night out on the town!

Who said that wearing stripes and flowered prints were a no-no? An unorthodox mix of prints is all the rage this spring.

Mix and Match Prints Guide
:
If you have a flowery sheer shirt, don’t’ be afraid to match it with a striped skirt (or vise versa). This style is not my favorite, but we can’t ignore its popularity this season so give it a try. If it works for you, rock it. If it doesn’t, leave it alone. Beware: This type of style creates a chance of looking like a clown. Be bold and free but remember; style is about looking nice in what you wear. Everything is not for everyone. If this style does not work for you do not force it. Move on to the next.

Trench Coats never go out of style. If you don’t have one, go out and buy one ASAP. You can always find a nice trench at your local H&M so go ahead and purchase. Trench coats give sophistication and keep you warm when the spring winds are blustery and cool. They also hide whatever fierce outfit you are wearing until you are ready to present it to your viewing audience.  Replace the belt attached to the coat with one of your own to add a little difference. It never hurts to add your own style to a coat! Make it your signature so that your coat doesn’t look like everyone else’s.

Now, what would a girl be without some sexy clothing in her wardrobe? Look for silks, satins and sheers this spring. We are going borderline lingerie, folks, get ready! Just make sure you don’t take it too far, moderation is very important.

Large Handbags--what more can I say? Whatever you have from last season, keep it. Large bags are still a fashion must-have.

Shoes are a girl’s best friend so keep your shoe game on point. This spring will see a lot of mid-height and wedged sandals that are colorful and gemstone or sequin-embellished. Have no fear my sky-high stiletto shoe owners, your favorites are still in style. Keep your stilettos!!! This season’s mid-height/wedge shoes are for those who cannot or will not wear skinny 4-6” heels. Mid-height shoes are also for those who love their high heels but need a break from the height from time to time. Mid-heights come in a variety of styles, colors and brands. Even if you are head over heels in love with your sky-highs, you might be surprised when you take a look at shoes with a slightly shorter heel. Check them out!

Jewelry 101: Always wear some. It doesn’t matter what it is, earrings, a necklace, or a bangle, just make sure you wear something. Here are some tips and tricks to fierce jewelry wear:
Wear layered and/or long necklaces. 2-4 layers of a necklace will add depth and texture. They are especially nice additions to low cut tops.

Wear more than one bangle at a time. This is the spring for gaudiness and attention grabbing pieces. Bangles make an outfit seem designer especially if you wear two or three on each arm (or one arm). They are also an easy way to make arms appear slimmer since they bring attention to the thinnest part of your arm rather than the thickest areas.

Don’t forget the earrings. I am a huge fan of large oversized earrings but, despite my love of huge earrings, this spring is calling for small dainty earrings that make a statement. Jeweled studs are popular this spring, in a variety of colors and textures. Look for colorful gemstones in your earrings that match an almost unnoticed area of your clothing. For instance, if you are wearing a printed top that is mixed with barely noticeable turquoise specks, find some turquoise gemstone studded earrings. The earrings will bring out the turquoise in the shirt and add more color to your outfit.

If you have an oversized-earring addiction like me, don’t worry. Large earrings are still in style. Just make sure you take it easy on the earrings if you are wearing necklaces and layers of bracelets/bangles. The more necklaces and bangles you wear, the less you need in the earring department.

Makeup: Not too popular this spring. Fresh, beach bound faces are the look for the warm weather to come. Foundation is always important, but an abundance of other makeup is not necessary. Keep your face fresh with a good cleanser and moisturizer, followed by a nice light foundation. Slow down on the dark eye liner and clumpy mascara. If eyeliner is a must chose a lighter shade than what you are used to (for example: try dark brown if you are used to using jet black). Also, try light pastel eyeshadows that complement your skin tone. The fresher your face, the better. Oh, and don’t forget the juicy lip gloss!

Hair: Short cuts are extremely popular right now but they are not taking the spotlight from the lusciousness of long hair. If you have a short style, whether it be an asymmetrical Pepa cut, or short baby dreds, keep it. If you don’t have it and you want it, go to your stylist and see what she/he can do or who they can recommend to you. Short hair is easy to manage and extremely sexy.

If your hair is long, let it flow! Loose flowing curls are a gorgeous addition to the femininity of the clothing styles this spring. To achieve the loose curl look, dampen your hair and roller set on large rods. Sit under a hooded dryer or let your hair air dry. Once your hair is dry, remove the rods for loose flowing curls. If you would rather not use rods, use a large barreled curling iron to curl your hair. Make sure you use a little spritz to hold the curls in place. Keep your hair wrapped around the curling iron long enough to shape a curl. You will have sexy, loose curls in no time.

If you have a long natural hair and do not care for the straight look, find a quality hand-held hair dryer and blow your hair out until your ‘fro is floppy and airy (a blow out). Find a cute head band to put on and let your natural hair blow in the wind. Don’t forget to comb it throughout the day to prevent tangles. Do not be afraid of your natural hair; find delight in its beauty!

If you have long locs, and want to have the look of luscious curls, wet your locs (damp, not dripping wet) and curl them on mid-sized flexie rods. Spritz each curled lock with extra-super hold spritz. Sit under a hooded dryer for as long as you can stand (1-2 hours depending on the thickness of your locks and strength of the hooded dryer). Once your hair is completely dry remove the rods and you will have beautifully curled locs. If you find that the curls are too tight, just wait a few days, they will loosen.

Smell like Spring…. It can be a little difficult to suggest perfume scents for others. Sniff around until you find a scent that you like and try it out. If you are looking for a new fragrance to try, Gucci has a fabulous scent entitled “Flora”. Flora is very feminine without an over-powering flowery smell. Check it out at your local Macy’s, Sephora, or Ulta (or anywhere where fine fragrances are sold).

I hope that this Guide to Spring 2010 has been helpful. Always remember, style is what you make it—never dress according others. Feel free to wear whatever you like, however you like, wherever you like. The suggestions in this post are here to give you ideas and inspiration. Have fun and stay fiercely fabulous!
